Congratulations to the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, who received the Veterans Community Service Award at NOVA's 2025 Spring Conference!
This award is presented to a person or organization that has provided outstanding service to America’s veterans, or to programs and legislation which positively affects America’s veterans.
This year, we are excited to present the award to an organization with more than 13 years of serving Veterans facing homelessness with access to VA benefits.
This organization has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to serving America’s veterans through innovative, impactful, and comprehensive free legal services. Its mission to remove legal barriers for veterans struggling with homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders has transformed the lives of countless veterans while advancing systemic change. Their pioneering work, including being the first medical-legal partnership with the VA, has made it a national model for veteran advocacy, embodying the principles of outstanding service.
Among their many achievements, they provide free legal representation for vulnerable veterans, are nationally recognized for their discharge upgrade legal practice manual, they established a pioneering medical-legal partnership model, conduct educational outreach and legislative advocacy, collaborate and engage with their community, and they cultivate strong partnerships with nonprofits, healthcare providers and community organizations to build a comprehensive support network for Veterans.
NOVA members say, “they are a national leader in providing legal support, advocating for systemic change, and driving innovative solutions for America’s veterans.”
We are thrilled to honor Connecticut Veterans Legal Center with the Veterans Community Service Award.

Congratulations to Alice Hansen, who received the NOVA Pro Bono Advocate of the Year Award at NOVA’s Spring 2025 Conference! The Pro Bono Advocate award is presented to recognize achievements and a continuing pattern of excellence in providing pro bono assistance to veterans and their families.
In addition to setting up outreach clinics throughout the states of Colorado and New Mexico, as the Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Veterans Advocacy Project, this year’s recipient has given special focus to working with the Navajo Nation. As the largest reservation of veteran Native Americans, the Navajo have endured systemic racism and marginalization both in-service and post-service and are frequently denied access to both VA healthcare and compensation.
She has helped over 50 of these veterans obtain service-connection for their disabilities, some of whom have been denied by the VA for decades.
NOVA members say, “Her pro bono work with these veterans has established hope in an otherwise bleak environment, and allowed them to trust, for the first time, an outside entity (lawyers, no less).”
And, “She truly exemplifies the pro bono spirit of assisting those in need. She has tirelessly worked to establish clinical locations in rural locations throughout Colorado and New Mexico, serving veterans who would otherwise be unable to access VA services.”
Thank you, Alice, for your tireless pro bono advocacy on behalf of our nation’s veterans!
